| Scarred For Life is a group of Southern California Punk Rockers brought together by Mr. Demian Cane. Demian has befriended most of the well-known acts in punk, and has roadied for them as well. Just to name a few: DISCHARGE, Dead Kennedy’s, Battalion of Saints, Dr. Know, Final Conflict, and The Business. Fed up with all the pop sounding crap that infiltrated the Southern California Punk scene, he decided that if the newer bands weren’t playing the kind of music that he wanted to hear, he’d form a band that was. What was to become the original line-up was finalized in February of 1997. This line-up included: Ron “Raygunn” Swiney--formerly of Glycine Max and Dogma Mundista, Clyde Abad --formerly of Pig Children, the original H.F.L. line-up, and Bonecrusher, Mike Robarge - formerly of Disrupters, and Steve Stearns--formerly of Power Assault. After six practices they ventured into the studio to record their debut release "Born Work Die." SFL played their first live gig in April of 1997 at “Live Bait” in Long Beotch, CA., and one week later, was forced to take six months off, due to some legal problems. A version of “Born Work Die” was released on the Dead Beat Records compilation “Viva La Vinyl Vol. 3”. After gigging around town for the rest of 1997 through 1998, "Born Work Die" was finally released while traveling up to Northern California in San Francisco, and Oakland in the spring of 1999. “Born Work Die”, a crushingly brutal release, was a breath of fresh air for the scene as a whole. With the local punk scene courting the fashionable, SFL was far from being with the “in” crowd. In fact, Albert from KNOW records in Long Beach, was the only one willing or even interested, to take a chance on putting out a release for them. Stemming from their disgust of the pop punk culture that infected Southern California and the rest of the world in the mid to late 90’s, the tracks blazed through in the old school style, reminiscent of the early 80’s Los Angeles, meets the UK. This album benchmarked their sound, and left a footprint that forever will be hard to fill. After some internal problems, Demian replaced Steve Stearns with a drummer formerly known as Chrischarge. The intent was for Chris to be the interim drummer, while they searched for a competent replacement for Mr. Stearns. However, as the months rolled forward it seemed as if he would be able to eventually fill the void that opened up without Steve. The change seemed to work in their favor, as a whole new attitude surrounded the group and their sound. The band took off, and didn’t look back. From that era forward, they have supported some of the most active bands in punk rock today, which include: Varukers, Icons Of Filth, Defiance, Misery, Aus Rotten, the Restarts, Extinction of Mankind, Stratford Mercenaries, Cluster Bomb Unit, Counter Blast, Phobia, Dystopia, DS-13, Cocksparrer, Final Conflict, El Corazon Del Sapo, Armed and Hammered, Beer Zone, Dr. Know, and the Bigots among others. The fall of 2000 landed Scarred For Life a tour in Europe. As a matter of fact, their first tour ever. They played in Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, and Holland. This tour also launched their limited release 7" "Far From Home." “Far From Home”, launched Chris’ recording debut. Although the band’s tempo slowed down a beat, their grass roots, in your face approach to songwriting, still took no prisoners. With the guttural vocals, knock down, drag out bass, and piercing guitar tracks, SFL’s trademark sound took on a new meaning. After a spring 2001, West Coast Tour with UK Legends, the Varukers, Mike decided that he had had enough, and quit. After about a 4-month search, Shan Ahmadi, formerly of: Middle Finger Response, Psychobabble, and Industroy, replaced Mike. Shan’s infectious style added a new flavor to SFL, and his talent alone is over the top. During this period, SFL was fortunate enough to share the stage with Swedish Legends “Diskonto”, at an American Indian benefit in Oklahoma. In April of 2002, Mike returned as Rhythm Guitar. In March of 2003, SFL was able to play a support spot for punks Legendary “Icons Of Filth”. Their second 7” release “Is This The Price Of Freedom” was recorded in the spring of 2003. Although there was a 2 year wait between releases, “Is This The Price Of Freedom”, again showed all that Scarred For Life’s music is always capable of knocking you down, and kicking you in the head. As a result of the Bush administrations’ lack of respect for human lives, the all too relevant anti-war lyrics, combined with some pissed off songwriting, this 7” raised the bar again. It’s been said that this release may be SFL’s strongest release to date. Scarred For Life was hoping that the momentum from this release would be able to sustain them, as an internal problem was raising its’ head again. The band was caught in a tug-o-war, with their not wanting to hurt someone’s feelings pulling one way, and doing what’s right for the band, pulling the other. Fortunately, in the best interest of the band, the decision to replace Chris on drums had to be made, in order for them to continue. SFL was scheduled to play with Punk Rock Legends “Discharge” in September 2003. Even though the band had agreed to find someone to fill in for this show, Raygunn asked if we would allow for Chris to play this one last time. With reservations, a group decision for this show to be Chris’ last gig with us was made. He pulled out days before the gig, leaving us NO chance of having someone sit in… The saying goes, “Hindsight is 20/20.” Raygunn, called upon an old friend, and brought him out of retirement. Mark Hall, aka “Satan”, is formerly of “Glycine Max”, and “the Apocalypse.” He takes the throne behind a seven-piece monster, which brings to mind the days gone by of Steve Stearns. As this new era unfolded, it appeared to be Scarred For Life’s strongest line-up ever. Scarred For Life’s Wall of Sound Raged Forward, as Mark’s debut shows came in support of The Restarts West Coast tour 2004. Unfortunately, Raygunn was again taking care of some legal problems on the inside, and Mike took over the vocal duties for those shows. 2004 also brought the support spot for a couple of Chaos UK’s shows, and all of Discharge’s West Coast dates. January of 2005, landed Scarred For Life a supporting spot at the Anarcho-Fest, which was a Tribute and benefit to “Stig” and his family, due to his untimely death at the end of 2004. 2005 landed the support spot for The Varukers Southwest Tour, and Scarred For Life was also honored to be able to support Broken Bones return to the U.S. for one of their So. Cal. dates. They also graced the stage with the likes of Toxic Narcotic, Kegcharge, World Burns To Death, Lower Class Brats, and Damage Case, among others. Mike and Mark closed out the year on a high note as each (well actually their better halves), had daughters respectively. In memorial and tribute Stig, Scarred For Life contributed an exclusive track to the compilation that will be released by Profane Existence. Spring 2006 will mark the release on Despotic Records, a split 7” with Japan’s Legendary Disclose. After months of pondering, March 2006 brought an amicable separation of Shan, and Mike moved back to his original Bass Crushing duties. They
are again working on new material for that ever so elusive full-length
release for 2006. The Crushing line-up today: Ron aka Raygunn-Vocals,
Clyde-Lead Guitar, Mike-Bass Crusher, and Mark aka Satan-Drums. |
